Television and Film Actor of ‘Top Gun,’ ‘Insecure,’ and ‘The Game’
Actor Jay Ellis will celebrate his new book, “Did Everyone Have an Imaginary Friend (or Just Me)?: Adventures in Boyhood” in Tulsa on Aug. 5.
Magic City Books and Booker T. Washington High School are hosting Ellis for a book signing at the high school’s auditorium, 1514 E. Zion St., at 7 p.m.
A star of HBO’s “Insecure,” Ellis tells the story of growing up with an imaginary best friend you will never forget — part Dwayne Wayne from “A Different World,” part Will Smith from “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” — in this hilarious, vulnerable memoir. It is a testament to the importance of invention, trusting oneself, and making space for creativity.
Ellis chronicles the life of a kid who confided in his imaginary sidekick, navigated parallel pop culture universes, and experienced a lifetime of birthday disappointments (being a Christmas-season Capricorn will do that to you) and hoop dreams gone bad.
Ellis, an NAACP Image Award winning actor, will be joined in conversation by Crissle West, co-host of “The Read,” a critically acclaimed podcast.
The ticketed event includes a copy of the author’s book. Discounted tickets are available for students by using the promo code STUDENT at checkout.
