TCC Connection, Society of Professional Journalists, and Library Services to Recognize Media Literacy Week 2024, Oct. 21-25

Tulsa Community College will be hosting Media Literacy Week for the second year. The TCC Foundation grand-funded project will host a series of events featuring activities, resources, and two marquee events from Oct. 21-25.

Each day will feature a different theme that comprises the definitional elements of media literacy. These themes are “access, analyze, evaluate, create, and act” that use all forms of media.  In that order, Monday through Friday will run with the themes as resources, and display tables will be made available at each TCC library as well as at the Center for Creativity at the Metro campus.

Two marque events are planned for Oct. 22 and 24, 4 p.m. – 6 p.m. Two screenings of “Trust Me,” a documentary about misinformation and manipulation in the media, will be shown to the college community.

“Trust Me” is the winner of the 2021 UNESCO Award for Media Literacy in North America and the Walter Cronkite Award for Excellence in Television Political Journalism.

The Oct. 22 event will be held in the Film Lecture Room (SC-102) at the Metro campus. The Oct. 24 program will be hosted in the auditorium in Building 9 at the Southeast campus. Each of these screenings will feature a presentation along with a panel moderated by the Department of Mass Communication. The screenings will have snacks, giveaways, and popcorn from Student Life.

Other days of the week will highlight all forms of media from television, print, audio, and social media that are available 24/7. According to the organizers, in the last century, humankind has experienced some of the greatest achievements thanks to the advancement of media.

The documentary will highlight as these forms of communication are ever changing, it has become even more apparent that understanding how to accurately use media literacy is much needed in this modern age.

During the week, sponsors of the program will share how media has become an essential life skill in the 21st century. Learning how to effectively use media is what Media Literacy Week will address.

The goal of the planners for the week is to create awareness and educate the college community about media literacy in the United States. Sponsored by the National Association for Media Literacy Education, this year will mark the 10th anniversary of Media Literacy Week, where colleges, universities, media organizations, and advocacy groups assemble to prepare events that help spread awareness and provide resources to the public. But most of all, the week is to help teach about media literacy.

The goal of the week is to explain how in an ever-changing landscape misinformation can spur mayhem. The event organizers and presenters during the week will share how vital the public should think critically when consuming or communicating through media.

In addition to the Foundation, Library Services, Society of Professional Journalists Student Chapter, and the TCC Connection, Media Literacy Week is supported by the Department of Mass Communication and Digital Media, and Tutoring Services.
