Tulsa Community College Theatre and Music Departments will present “Sister Act, A Divine Musical Comedy” on Feb. 29 – March 3 (Feb. 29 – March 2, 8 p.m.; March 3, 2 p.m.) at the PACE Studio Theatre on the campus of Tulsa Community College Southeast, 10300 E. 81st. St.
“Sister Act, A Divine Musical Comedy” is written by Sheri and Bill Steinkellner and Douglas Carter Beane. The music is by Alan Menken and lyrics by Glenn Slater. The musical is based off the 1992 film starring Whoopi Goldberg. It is a story of a disco club singer in the 1970s, Deloris Van Cartier, played by Mikaela Scott. Deloris is placed in protective custody in a dying convent. Her unique brand of (disco and) funk comes face-to-face with the traditions of the church and the strict order is in for a change,” reads a press release.
“(Deloris) masquerading as a nun named Mary Clarence, this sister’s act will have you laughing and singing in the aisles.” Nominated for five Tony Awards, including Best Musical. The musical is being produced by special arrangement by Music Theatre International.
Joining Scott in the cast are Valentine Tarpley as Mother Superior; Brayden Marchant as Curtis, the mobster; Von Love as Eddie, the cop; Ashtyn Marshall as Sister Mary Patrick; Amanda Yarberry as Sister Mary Robert; Samantha Kennedy as Sister Mary Lazarus; Jenna Soltis as Sister Mary Theresa; Jillian Mohn as Sister Mary of Tours; and guest artist, Mark LeHoullier as Monsignor O’Hara. The individual who will be playing the Pope will be a guest artist surprise
Also appearing in the ensemble playing numerous roles are Ana Nunez in a dual role of Sister Mary Peer and Pablo, Canyon Garner as TJ, Touna Vue as Ernie, Adam Morgan as Joey, Aaliyah Morris as Tina, Sydney Greena as Michelle, and Conner Griffin and Dominic Diamond as police officers. Playing other nuns are Moriah Jestus as Sister Mary Smiles, Natalie Curtis as Sister Mary Frolic, Nicole Brookman as Sister Mary Wary, Becky Hankins as Sister Mary Graceless, and Sydney Greeno as Sister Mary Tattle.
“Sister Act”features choreography by Jennifer Andrasko. The design team includes Aaron Kennedy (Set Design), Stephanie Stone (Production Stage Manager and Lighting Design), Emily Westerfield (Costume Design), Ally Hardsaw (Sound Designer), and Madison Bejamin (Make-up and hair design). Additional production personnel are Moriah Jestus (Properties), Randal Pike (Set Construction), Ryan Johnson (Assistant Stage Manager), and Jo Jocie Fechter (Assistant Costumer).
Mark Frank is the artistic director and Laura Cowan is the music director and conductor. Angeline LeLeux-Bajzek serves as the rehearsal accompanist.
