“Tulsa Review” has published 10 issues since its inception in 2014. It is a student-run, online literary journal published each year by Tulsa Community College and funded by the TCC Foundation and the TCC English Department.
Stated on the publication’s About page, “Our mission is to place the bold, unique voices of TCC students alongside the work of great emerging and established writers and artists from around the world.”
To further that point, Sloan Davis, associate professor of English, provided insight into the online publication’s growth. “The ‘Tulsa Review’ has grown over the years from an in-house college journal to a fully formed international journal. We have published authors and poets from around the globe,” said Davis.
“Of course, we are also very proud of the TCC student writing and art competitions. Every year, we are amazed at the creativity and talent of our TCC students. This makes our work at the ‘Tulsa Review’ meaningful.”
Davis is joined by Assistant Professor of English, Amy Rains. She serves as one of the managing editors of the publication.
“One of the things I enjoy most about being part of the ‘Tulsa Review’ is the opportunity it provides for faculty and students to work together in building an issue that celebrates creativity and community. Students are involved in every aspect of the publication process, allowing them to really engage with the fresh, innovative work that creatives from across the world are developing right now,” said Rains.
“When faculty and students come together to discuss contributions from these local and global artists, we create a space where diverse ideas and cultures can intersect and interact. That’s a pretty beautiful thing.”
“The ‘Tulsa Review’ is very much a team effort,” Rains explained. “We have a handful of TCC English professors who take turns leading the project from year to year as the managing editor. There’s usually a different batch of students each year, too, who join the student editorial staff, so we’re constantly adding new perspectives to the mix.”
How to Submit Work to ‘Tulsa Review’
As an annual publication, TCC students and writers from all over are encouraged and welcomed to submit their literary works. There are three categories to choose from: visual art, poetry, and short prose, which include works such as short stories, flash fictions, personal essays, flash creative nonfiction, one-act plays, or even screenplays. Students may submit to the student contests, and those who are not may enter their work into general submissions.
The submission deadline for this year is March 1. For more information or to read previous issues, go to Tulsa Review.com
The ‘Tulsa Review’ would not be possible without those who contribute to its success. The website identifies those individuals as the following:
