Tulsa Community College is hosting International Day of Peace 2024 Commemoration. This year’s program will be hosted Sept. 19 at noon at the Peace Garden on the Southeast Campus. The event will feature live music, snacks, sharing of cultures, as well as activities related to “Peace Day”. The United Nations (UN) has designated ‘Cultivating a Culture of Peace’ as this year’s theme.
Established in 1981 by the UN, International Day of Peace is observed worldwide each year on Sept. 21. It is a day for people and nations to commit to peace despite their differences while striving to cultivate the peace they wish to see in the world.
In 2001, the United Nations General Assembly unanimously voted to designate International Day of Peace as a time for nonviolence and ceasefire. This year is the 20th anniversary of the UN Resolution on the Programme of Action on a Culture of Peace.
The United Nations defines, “Culture of Peace” as a “set of values, attitudes, modes of behavior and ways of life that reject violence and prevent conflicts by tackling their root causes to solve problems through dialogue and negotiation among individuals, groups, and nations.”
At last year’s International Peace Day at Southeast Campus, paper doves adorned the SEC Peace Garden with messages of peace written on them. The annual communal singing of Woody Guthrie’s “This Land is Your Land” was held among other songs sung by students and faculty.
