Review: Oklahoma Pastel Society Hosts Annual Exhibition

A Vibrant Contest Awes with Beauty

The Oklahoma Pastel Society held its annual brightly colored pastel art exhibition at a reception, where members displayed their artwork at the Tulsa Community College’s McKeon Center for Creativity.

The contest was judged on “creativity, originality, composition, color, value, shape/form perspective, and how did the subject communicate meaning to the viewer. It was a simple mathematical process, but sometimes art is mathematics,” stated judge Linda Dunbar.

The Pastel Society is centrally located in Oklahoma City. The organization sponsors premier opportunities to meet the artists behind the works. Some of whom were recipients of awards on this summer day, July 12.

Meet the Artists

“The Filmmaker,” a portrait of a man with a film camera, won Best in Show. “This is my son, he is a filmmaker, my other son is a photographer. And when I saw this picture that he had taken, I just fell in love with it,” said Best in Show winner Kathy Burns on what inspired her to create the distinguished piece of art. (Photo by Chase Goza)

“In 2020, during Covid, I started a series on Elton John. I’m a huge fan, and he had just finished his 50th year as a performer. I needed to commemorate that somehow. I started doing these drawings, paintings, and one for every year since his breakthrough performance in 1970,” said first place winner in figure/portraits/animals category, Marie Kash Weltzheimer. “Sisters” by artist Debbie K. Gauger was showcased at the reception as well. Gauger said regarding her art, “They (her daughters) hauled hay for my husband, and my husband hauled hay for his dad. It was through the years, really neat. I actually did a small eight by eight [inch] painting first. [It was] real loose. Then I did the bigger one; it was a lot of fun. I just had fun with it.” (Photo by Chase Goza)

The annual event features artwork presented by members of the Oklahoma Pastel Society. The works of art will be on display from July 2-29. First place winners included Marie Kash Weltzheimer’s “Taking a Bow” (Figure/Portrait/Animal), Cindy McBride’s “Dancing Vine” (Floral/Still Life), and Jan Hutchinson’s “Dunes” (Landscape). “The Filmmaker” by Kathy Burns won Best in Show.
