Children’s Summer Theatre presents the Award-Winning “The SpongeBob Musical”

“The SpongeBob Musical,” declared “BRILLIANT!” by The New York Times, will be presented by Tulsa Community College’s Tulsa Children’s Summer Theatre. The performance is scheduled for July 27, 28, and 29 at 7 p.m. and July 30 at 2 p.m. All shows will be at the VanTrease Performing Arts Center for Education at the TCC Southeast Campus, 10300 E. 81st St.

The play has been critically acclaimed. It was recognized as the 2018 Best Musical winner of the Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle Awards, where the power of optimism really can save the world. This family friendly musical takes us on a joyous ride from television to the stage as SpongeBob and all of Bikini Bottom face catastrophe—until a most unexpected hero rises and celebrates friendship and cooperation and learns the power of unity and inclusion.

“The SpongeBob Musical,” is based on the cartoon series on Nickelodeon by Stephen Hillenburg. The production features a book by Kyle Jarrow, orchestrations and arrangements and additional music and lyrics by Tom Kitt, and the musical production conceived by Tina Landau. Stage rights were granted through Concord Theatricals.

“The SpongeBob Musical” features an original pop and rock-infused score by a legendary roster of Grammy® Award-winning songwriters. It is a one-of-a-kind musical event with original songs by Yolanda Adams, Steven Tyler and Joe Perry of Aerosmith, Sara Bareilles, Jonathan Coulton, Alex Ebert of Edward Sharpe and The Magnetic Zeros, The Flaming Lips, Lady Antebellum, Cyndi Lauper and Rob Hyman, John Legend, Panic! At the Disco, Plain White T’s, They Might Be Giants, T.I., Domani and Lil’C and songs by David Bowie and Brian Eno, and by Tom Kenny and Andy Paley. Additional lyrics are by Jonathan Coulton.

The local presentation will be directed by Mark Frank, associate professor and coordinator/director of the Theatre Department. The music direction will be under Suzi Gregory. Additional roles will be performed by the following: choreography by Lexi Jo Sweeny, set design by Aaron Kennedy, costume and makeup design by Emily Westerfield, and lighting design by Stephanie Stone.
