The Writing Center becomes more comfortable after the renovation

In fall 2019, the Writing Center celebrated its grand reopening after being under construction for months. The employees of the center held a party with coffee, popcorn, and prizes for those who participated in the prize drawing.

Jennette Royster, academic lab coordinator at the Metro Writing Center, is very excited about the updated facility.

“Before, we had the main computer lab and cubicles. The room was blocked with cubicle walls,” Royster said. “The construction workers demolished that and opened the floor. Now, there are extra sitting spots.”

“Overall, there is more open space and more rooms,” she stated.

“We received new furniture, such as tables, desks, and chairs for employees and students. Two new big tables in the lab could be split apart. All new furniture is more comfortable,” Royster added.

The Writing Lab employees are also happy with how the tutoring and nursing study rooms interiors are reorganized.

“The tutoring room became more quiet. We will order a projector. We plan to schedule open workshops, so TCC teachers are welcomed to reserve the room for their classes or seminars,” Royster said.

The Writing Center helps students with their writing assignments. Six tutors at the Metro Campus are qualified to assist with grammar, punctuation, sentence construction, research writing, and formatting.

The tutors can also help with MLA (Modern Language Association) and APA (American Psychological Association) styles.

According to Royster, more and more students request the Writing Center services.

“The first eight weeks of the fall semester, we get very busy. In fall 2018, we saw 30 percent increase in the number of students who used the Writing Center,” Royster said.

“We work with students on any subject, such as history, humanity, etc. Sometimes, students need just brainstorming,” she added.

The Writing Center provides its services in the facility and online. Usually, appointments are scheduled for students to have a one-on-one tutoring with a specialist.

The online Writing Center is on the TCC library page under the “Services” icon.
