Everything You Need to Know About Leadership Opportunities at TCC

The Tulsa Community College Foundation consistently seeks ways to provide opportunities beyond financial incentives, offering educational and leadership training to help students grow both academically and personally.

Two such initiatives are the TrueBlue Lead (TBL) and Peer Health Education (PHE) scholarship programs, which provide engagement opportunities for current and prospective students. These scholarships award up to $4,000 in tuition assistance each academic year.

The TrueBlue Lead Program was established about 10 years ago and is structured around monthly meetings that focus on leadership development and personal growth. These meetings feature presentations and workshops from various campus departments, such as Career Services, and Counseling and Wellness Services. Topics covered include resume building, leadership styles, team building, and time management – critical skills that support students’ leadership growth.

Through the program, students gain hands-on experience in communication, public speaking, and leadership by participating in activities and discussions designed to foster community and personal growth. TBL members also assist with major TCC events, including commencement and the Vision Dinner. The Dean of Student Success, Jennifer Beatie, played a key role in developing the scholarship and, along with a dedicated team, has continued to refine the program since its official launch in 2016.

In an interview, Andrew Eastwood, program coordinator for the TBL program, emphasized the program’s impact, stating, “It’s not just about learning how to be a leader. It’s about learning how to be a team player and how to communicate well with others, whether you know them or not. These are crucial skills that don’t develop overnight, which is why being part of a program like this is so valuable.”

To apply for the TrueBlue Lead program, students must first complete the general TCC Foundation scholarship application. After submission, applicants access a dashboard listing various scholarship opportunities, including TBL. The application includes questions such as, (1) “Why are you interested in the TBL program?” (2) “What experiences make you a unique addition to the leadership team?” and (3) What advice would you share with a prospective student about TCC?”

Eastwood emphasized that the program seeks enthusiastic, engaged students who are committed to their own development and to serving the TCC community. There are no specific skill requirements, as the program aims to build a diverse team of student leaders.

Another branch of TrueBlue Lead is the Peer Health Education (PHE) program, which launched in fall 2020. Initially operating online during the pandemic, PHE hosted virtual activities focused on stress management, mental health, and interactive engagement like study playlists and tournaments. Post-pandemic, the program transitioned to in-person meetings with a focus on fostering authentic connections among students.

PHE covers essential health topics, including stress management, sexual health, mental health, and healthy relationships. Program requirements include attending a mandatory retreat, completing Certified Peer Educator (CPE) training, assisting with health education events, and creating their own wellness initiatives. The program offers both structure and flexibility, allowing students to take initiative while receiving support.

Through PHE, students also gain valuable certifications in mental health first aid, suicide prevention, and other crucial health education areas. Randii Harrald, a program coordinator, highlighted the importance of PHE in addressing student needs while providing financial support.

“I knew this program could offer students a meaningful experience while recognizing the responsibilities they juggle, such as jobs and family life,” said Harrald.

When asked for application advice, Harrald encouraged students to be themselves.

“Just be authentically you. It’s easy to see when someone is genuine. There’s a certain energy that shines through when someone is truly passionate about something. Have fun with the application and maybe do a little research beforehand to help guide your responses.”

Applications for both TrueBlue Lead and Peer Health Education scholarships are open to current and prospective students through the TCC Foundation scholarship application site.
