Otter Cove and Gift Shop: A Slice of History and Flavor on Route 66

Nestled near Miami’s Main Street, Otter Cove, 232 S. Main St., is a restaurant that carries layers of history.

The building was originally a Texaco Gas Service Station. It was operated by the late Earl Sandmire, who began operating the Texas Oil Co. station in 1928. Sandmire ran the station for 40 years. About two decades ago, the Ottawa Tribe acquired the property, uncertain of its future, until Otter Cove Diner and Gift Shop breathed new life into the location.

A Gateway to Route 66 Nostalgia

Miami serves as a gateway to Route 66, featuring vibrant murals painted by locals that depict the city’s rich history and the spirit of the famous highway stretching from Illinois to California. Otter Cove complements this atmosphere, immersing visitors in nostalgia. The restaurant is filled with Route 66 memorabilia, showcasing artifacts and decor that tell stories of past road trips and historical stops.

Inside, the diner embraces its roots as a former gas station. Vintage car parts, like front grilles, are incorporated into the decor, blending seamlessly with the Route 66 and gas station themes. Additionally, the aesthetic honors Native American history, offering a unique spin that reflects the region’s heritage.

Food That Keeps You Coming Back

Otter Cove’s menu is packed with comfort food that delights travelers and locals alike. The restaurant burgers and sandwiches steal the show, with standout options like the Blackened Chicken Sandwich, Pulled Pork Sandwich, and Chicken Philly. One of their newer creations, the Hog-N-Heifer Burger, has quickly become a crowd favorite.

When it comes to desserts, Otter Cove shines with its famous milkshakes and a must-try peach cobbler. These treats are the perfect way to end a hearty meal.
