The Theatre Department at Tulsa Community College will be performing its play, “The Cat in the Hat” by Dr. Seuss, as part of its Children’s Summer Theatre Camp at the VanTrease Performing Arts Center for Education (PACE) Studio Theatre, 10300 E. 81st St., June 13-15.
The department’s production will be directed by Mark Frank with set and property design led by Moriah Jestus. With the college staff, the children, ages 8-17 years old, participated in a two-week camp with an enrollment of 50 students.
Frank’s goal is to present Dr. Seuss’ beloved classic as a come-to-life on stage, animated, and an action-packed, comical romp that is sure to delight all ages.
Regarding the book, published in 1957, that the play is based, the renowned children’s author said, “I know it is wet and the sun is not sunny, but we can have lots of good fun that is funny.” Dr. Theodor Seuss Geisel authored more than 60 books for young people.
In the play, you will be invited to join Sally and her brother, Conrad, as their rainy-day blues are turned upside-down by a playful stranger in a striped hat. “The Cat in the Hat” creates a day full of wacky adventure, wondrous balancing feats, and zany rhymes. It all seems under control (well, maybe not to the fish) until the Cat unleashes Thing 1 and Thing 2.
“I know some new tricks,” said the Cat in the Hat. “A lot of good tricks. I will show them to you. Your mother will not mind at all if I do.”
With the introduction of characters Thing 1 and Thing 2, mischief and mayhem ensue. The hilarious and initially disastrous outcomes in the house leave the children to wonder what their mother will say when she returns home!
Tickets are $5 at the door or by going to https://pacetickets.tulsacc.edu/events. Seating is limited.
